Mary Chamberlain, from the Ministry of Education, provides a brief description of the key competencies, explaining their importance for employment and personal well-being.

Transcript

Key competencies are the things that we want young people to have so they get the best out of life. They are the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable them to do something with the knowledge they gain in schooling.

They are important not only for employment but for personal and social life. They are the things like critical thinking, about goal setting, about knowing what to do when the going gets tough, about managing yourself and getting through those hard places.

No one ever achieved anything in life without being able to pick themself up and carry on when the going gets hard.
