Goals
The Implementation Project has three goals. These goals provide a basis for the design of initiatives to achieve the objectives of the project.
- To create an environment that supports change at the school and system levels
- To support professional inquiry, exploration, and the development of professional practice
- To enable sustained curriculum development within schools and across the system
Objectives
In the years 2007–2010:
- school leaders will have access to information and support that will enable them to guide the redevelopment of the curriculum in their school with confidence
- schools will be able to access in-school professional development that enhances school-wide and classroom professional practice
- teachers will have access to materials online and in print that provide useful exemplars of what giving effect to the curriculum looks like in other classrooms
- boards of trustees will have access to relevant and appropriate information to enable them to undertake the governance role associated with the regulatory requirements of the curriculum
- families/whānau and communities will be provided with information that will support them to contribute to their children's learning and engage with the school with greater confidence.
Project statement
The Implementation Project will support schools as they give effect to The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) based on a collective vision for our young people as confident, connected, actively involved lifelong learners. The support will help schools to take account of the spirit and intent of the curriculum and to enact it in a way that best suits the diverse learning needs of their particular students and expectations of their communities.
The project is based on the understanding that implementation of The New Zealand Curriculum will have the greatest impact on outcomes for students if, at the school and system levels, there is a sustained focus on:
- putting students first
- enhancing professional practice
- building partnerships to support students' learning
- sustaining learning communities.
The implementation programme will:
- create an environment that supports change at the school and system levels
- support professional inquiry, exploration, and the development of professional practice
- enable sustained curriculum development within schools and across the system.
Key messages for schools
- This is about improving learning and teaching for all students, particularly those not currently succeeding.
- Schools will be supported to review their programmes and make necessary changes.
- Schools will build on what they already do.
- Existing programmes are still relevant.
- There is ongoing work to ensure the achievement standards are available to support teachers and schools as they develop school curriculum aligned to The New Zealand Curriculum.
