Corinne Hansell, principal of Tamaki Primary School, discusses re-framing the approach to dealing with parents, families/whānau.

Transcript

We moved away from the ‘talking to parents’ model about what was to happen in the homes to encourage reading support and we moved into what sorts of things would you like to know about what we’re doing at school. While we did have the parents working in the different ethnic groups, we were beginning to hear comments about how the lead parents were maybe the younger of the groups and they weren’t feeling all that comfortable about directing older members of their cultural groups and that was something that we had come across before and felt a little bit familiar with.
