Teachers at Tamaki Primary School talk about the overall goal for their students, and combining students' own cultural understandings in their learning as guided by discussions with parents.

Transcript

We want our children to be up there nationally, not just below, but up there. That’s the aim, that’s where we’re going.

The children at this school work out of school very much as a family unit and they have a very very strong sense of community. Once I took away from the classroom that independent work ethos and brought into it the group work and the sharing, the children just went – they took off in their learning because that was what they’re used to. I learnt that they’re very strong with their culture, very strong with their religion and by making reference to those things I was able to get real buy-in with their learning. And I learnt that just from having casual conversation with the parents.
