Update March 2008

Auckland and Northland

Professional development meetings for sector leaders have been held in Northland and Auckland and an agreed annual plan for the sector leader work for 2008 is now in place. The plan includes ongoing professional development for the sector leaders themselves, as well as professional development for school leaders in professional learning communities led by sector leaders. The professional learning communities will meet for the first time this term, supported by leadership and management facilitators.

An additional post-launch workshop was held late January; in all, 15 workshops were held over the December–January period, attended by two representatives from each of the participating schools.

Other initiatives to support sector leaders in giving effect to the New Zealand Curriculum are being developed, with the focus on schools working in clusters that meet several times during the year.

Waikato, King Country, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and East Coast

Most sector leaders have selected their clusters. We have a diverse range of clusters across the region and these include both existing clusters and new clusters formed for the purpose of exploring the new curriculum. There are two clusters formed around special character schools, and several others include a combination of primary and secondary schools.

The second sector leaders day was held on 26 February 2008.

An outcome of our sector leaders day was to set up a wiki space to create an online learning community. It is also a vehicle for sharing contact details, cluster details, and resources.

We have a three-tier sector leader support structure which includes having an identified leadership and management/C3 adviser working alongside each sector leader as required, smaller regional clusters of sector leaders and advisers to meet to share progress, and whole-sector leader group days to be held once a term.

Manawatu, Wanganui, Taranaki, and Hawkes Bay

Twelve clusters and sector leaders have been selected and are now working through goals and action plans. Another six clusters are being funded and supported by Massey University.

A two-day training session was held in January for the sector leaders and any other interested leaders. A total of 27 attended with positive feedback from all.

Reports from sector leaders indicate a positive and enthusiastic start for the clusters.

Wellington and Wairarapa

The Wellington region's series of five New Zealand Curriculum workshops, providing a broad overview of the New Zealand Curriculum and highlighting the need for change, concluded on 20 February 2008 in Wellington city. Three 2008 regional workshops (rescheduled from November) were extremely well attended.

The sector leaders met in February to clarify their roles as coordinators of professional learning communities (PLC). They shared their progress to date regarding the selection of school clusters, identification of cluster needs, and the development of an action plan for 2008.

Victoria University School Support Service is committed to coordinating regional workshops throughout the year, assisting schools to implement aspects of the New Zealand Curriculum.

Help

100 sector leaders

One hundred school leaders have been selected to lead and support regional learning communities. The intention of this initiative is to recognise and grow capability in each of the regions to provide grassroots support for school leaders who are giving effect to the New Zealand Curriculum.

Auckland

The 30 sector leaders across Auckland Tai Tokerau will be supported by TEAM Solutions. Sector leaders, with support from a leadership and management facilitator, will work together to enable schools within each cluster to share and build collaborative approaches to explore ideas and try new practice that supports the implementation of the New Zealand Curriculum. These professional learning opportunities will take the form of a professional learning group focused around curriculum implementation such as introducing the key competencies.

Waikato

A regional reference group was set up with the local Ministry of Education and representatives from principals’ groups, the School Trustees Association, New Zealand Educational Institute, and Post Primary Teachers’ Association. All schools were offered the opportunity to apply. The appointment process was conducted in partnership with the School Support Service, the Regional Reference Group, and the Ministry’s Central North Island regional offices. The regional reference group made the final selection from the applicants based on geographic coverage.

Two regional workshops are planned. The first will be held on 9 November 2007 in Hamilton where sector leaders will work with Support Services advisers to plan regional cluster strategies and develop action plans. Each leader will be supported in the development and implementation of an action plan. The nature of the support will depend on the needs identified by the sector leaders. It is also intended to create an online forum where sector leaders, as well as leadership and management facilitators from School Support Services, can develop a professional learning community to share ideas and resources.

Central North Island

The central region will have 18 sector leaders facilitating clusters of schools to explore and develop ways of working with the new curriculum. Schools have been asked to nominate possible sector leaders and these leaders will have two days initial training and then ongoing support from the Centre of Education – Massey University.

Wellington

Ten sector leaders were selected in the Wellington region in August following overwhelming interest from primary and secondary principals, and deputy principals. The sector leaders have met with leadership and management facilitators on three occasions to plan for the post-release regional workshops and to develop professional learning community cluster work for 2008.

Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast

The process for selecting the sector leaders was decided after discussion with the Christchurch regional office of the Ministry. Each of the principals’ associations was invited to provide a key contact person to lead the development of a plan for the implementation of the New Zealand Curriculum within their association. Almost all of the 23 groups have identified a leader. The first meeting of these sector leaders was held in Christchurch on 18 October 2007.

Otago and Southland

The selection of the sector leaders is currently being finalised. The region will have about 12 sector leaders who will have an initial training session in early November and a further day along with Education Support Services (ESS) advisory staff in mid November 2007. The first major task will be to participate in the regional Engagement and Planning workshops where they will meet with possible school cluster groups. By the beginning of December, each sector leader will have developed a plan of action for their clusters with support from ESS advisory staff.
