Student views
How do our students view learning? How do they see their future, and define success? Is school meeting their expectations? Which subjects do they like or dislike – and why? What helps them to learn? What makes a good teacher?
The responses students have given to these questions add a valuable dimension to the discussions around the review of the New Zealand curriculum and te marautanga o Aotearoa.
The questions were asked in face-to-face consultations with over 100 intermediate and secondary students from throughout New Zealand between April and July 2004.
Ten schools took part in the focus groups: two intermediates, five state secondary schools (a mixture of co-educational, and boys and girls schools), a state-integrated school, an alternative education centre, and a private boys college. The decile ratings of the schools ranged from 3 to 10. All had varying numbers of Māori, Pasifika, and Asian students on their rolls. Students consulted were from years 7 to 13.
