Question 5 – What are your next steps in engaging the community to a greater extent?
This collection of tweets brings together the responses that we received for question five in our #edchatnz twitter session.
The six tweets below describe ways to enhance community engagement with curriculum design:
- going to the community, rather than expecting the community to come to you
- using social media, such as Facebook, to connect with whānau and gather their voice
- connecting to whānau through students
- keeping the focus of parent teacher conferences on the academic, rather than the pastoral
- contacting local iwi, to make stronger connections with Māori whānau
- offering parents a range of choices to connect with curriculum over a whole day

Challenge your school to address the following questions, and examine what is really happening with community engagement at your kura:
- How do you transition from social, meet-and-greet relationship building to the development of truly integrated community curriculum design?
- Which of the suggestions above could you try right now? How are you going to "walk the tweet"?
- In what ways do you ensure that learning is at the centre of your communication with parents?
- "Community involvement: Parents, caregivers and friends of the school are welcome to become actively involved in the life of the school. There are many ways they can help including repairing library books, making classroom equipment, helping teachers in the classroom and assisting with class trips or outings." This is an approach often seen on school websites. how are you going to change this messaging in your school, to show parents that they can make a meaningful contribution to student learning?
