Purpose:
To raise the capacity and capability of best practice facilitators in Māori medium settings to lead effective curriculum and assessment design and implementation.
Kaikōtuitui are the key teachers in senior wharekura who promote and manage delivery of curriculum and assessment changes, and can influence and lead improvements in classroom practice. They are also instrumental in engaging whānau, hapū, and iwi in kura based practices.
The Best Evidence Synthesis highlights the impact on student achievement when school leaders promote and/or participate in effective teacher professional learning and development.
Outcome sought through procurement:
Kaikōtuitui are supported to become more effective curriculum, assessment and pedagogical leaders in their wharekura.
Notes:
- Kaikōtuitui may be teachers, head teachers, senior managers or designated staff in the wharekura that have specific leadership roles.
- Wharekura programmes of learning must be aligned to Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
- The capacity and capability of Kaikōtuitui is variable and involves strong relationship building and collaboration with whānau, hapū, and/or iwi.
- Kaikōtuitui undertake a diverse range of tasks across a variety of contexts in kura and Māori medium settings, for example, dimensions of leadership and subject-specific teacher practice, reo Māori and Māori world view approaches.
- Provision of PLD to this group requires a range of specialist knowledge and skills specific to a kaupapa Māori framework. This means that Māori cultural processes and protocols will be applied and the development of Māori derived theory and pedagogical practice will be prioritised.
- NCEA standards-based assessment and practices are highly specialised and high stakes.
- Senior curriculum design and transitions to work, tertiary, and training are influenced by best practice, government priorities (for example, Youth Guarantee) and iwi education partnerships that are active within a rohe.
- Wharekura teachers may be isolated in their specific subject and/or positions of responsibility so innovative approaches to connecting them to other wharekura and/or acknowledged Māori medium experts needs to be considered (for example e-learning).
- Te Rūnanga Nui o ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa and Kura ā-Iwi Incorporated Society are engaged to complement PLD provision in kura they are responsible for.
- Principles of Professional Development (Special notes) in Māori Medium need to be taken into account by PLD providers.
