What is Te Manawa Pou?
Te Manawa Pou is a free online professional learning and development programme for te reo Māori teachers from English-medium primary schools. It is designed particularly for those based in rural areas, or those who may be the only teacher of te reo Māori in their school and thus may benefit from making connections with others.
The Te Manawa Pou programme consists of three modules:
- Module 1 ‘Toi te Kupu’ – starts Term 2, 2011, and has a focus on enhancing teacher proficiency in te reo Māori, with a proficiency target comparable to curriculum levels 1 and 2 of Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te ako i Te Reo Māori – Kura Auraki: Curriculum Guidelines for Teaching and Learning Te Reo Māori in English-medium Schools Years 1–13.
Note: Some teachers may already be at, or above, this level of proficiency. These teachers can still participate in the online programme by starting when Module 2 begins.
- Module 2 ‘Toi te Ako’ – starts Term 3, 2011 and has a focus on enhancing effective te reo Māori language teaching and learning.
- Module 3 ‘Toi te Mana’ – starts Term 4, 2011 and has a focus on curriculum design, implementation and review of a school wide te reo Māori programme in partnership with whānau and iwi.
Why would teachers be involved?
Te Manawa Pou aims to build teachers’ confidence and improve their proficiency in using and teaching te reo Māori. It will focus on effective teaching and learning, increasing participants’ knowledge about second language acquisition, curriculum design, tools and resources available, and assessment for te reo Māori. It will also support participants as they review, design, and implement their own school wide te reo Māori programmes in partnership with whānau and iwi.
Who might want to be involved?
Year 1–8 primary teachers, who are:
- located in isolated or remote areas, or
- the only teacher of te reo Māori in their school.
