Principles in action (PDF, 153 KB)
The New Zealand Curriculum Principles are the foundations of curriculum decision making and state the most important considerations for school communities when developing a school-based curriculum aligned to the NZC. These broad directions, aligned to core beliefs of our national curriculum, provide schools with a framework to translate more specific intentions within a school-based curriculum.
‘They should underpin all school decision making’ - The New Zealand Curriculum,p9 . This statement indicates the role and intent of NZC Principles. These diagrams show how the NZC Principles can be used in a number of practical ways at all levels – school systems, leadership and classroom practice.
As schools consider how the NZC jigsaw (Vision, Principles, Values, Key Competencies, Pedagogy and Learning Areas) fits together, it is the role of the Principles to provide the framework that ensures a mesh approach - rather than a layered one.
The diagrams reflect the NZC Principles: Cultural Diversity, Inclusion, Learning to Learn, Coherence, Community Engagement and High Expectations encased and guided by the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Future Focus Themes.
