Launch of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (Māori medium curriculum)

28/09/08

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, the new curriculum for Māori medium schools and settings, was launched at Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori in Lower Hutt on Friday 26 September 2008 by Hon Parekura Horomia, Associate Minister of Education and Minister of Māori Affairs.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa has been developed and written in te reo Māori with the Māori education sector and is not a translation of the English medium curriculum.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa will ensure students have the skills and knowledge to participate, contribute to, and succeed in both te ao Māori (Māori world-view) and te ao whānui (global world-view). Students will be confident, connected, actively involved, life long learners.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa sets the direction for teaching and learning, and gives flexibility and guidance for kura (schools) to work closely with whānau, hapū and iwi to develop a school-based curriculum for their communities.

Copies of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

Distribution of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa to the Māori medium education sector will begin in mid November and be completed by the end of the school year.

Online copies will be made available from www.minedu.govt.nz and other leading education websites by late October 2008.

Teachers, schools and In-Service Teacher Educators are requested to postpone making a request for copies until December 2008.

The distribution plan will ensure that one copy will be provided for every teacher in Level 1 and Level 2 Māori medium schools and settings. Two copies will be provided for each Board of Trustee Chairperson and one copy for each principal.
