English-medium and Māori-medium schools teacher-only days
20/10/08
The Prime Minister, Rt Hon Helen Clark has announced that extra teacher-only days will be offered to all state schools to support them as they work to give effect to The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
One extra day will be provided for all schools. A further day will be provided for schools with secondary students to recognise the additional focus for secondary schools on building the curriculum and the aligned standards to create flexible pathways that best motivate and engage all students in ways that keep them in education. These days are in addition to the day that was announced at the launch of the NZC.
The Minister of Education, Hon Chris Carter would like to encourage trustees to contribute further to the successful implementation of these curricula by providing one call-back day for each teacher-only day to provide a significant block of focused time for whole staff reflection, planning and review of each school's curriculum.
A letter from the minister about the teacher-only days will be sent to all principals, and the chairperson of all boards of trustees.
