The New Zealand curriculum guides - Senior secondary is the home of the teaching and learning guides for senior secondary subjects. These guides have been designed to help teachers create quality teaching and learning programmes. They are adjuncts to The New Zealand Curriculum and should be understood as resources rather than syllabuses or prescriptions.

Principal, Chrissie Beetham, talks us through her approach to leading curriculum change and the myriad of ways the school involves the community in student learning. They have a very successful programme that engages not only their immediate school community but also community members with no direct link to the school. We also showcase inquiry learning at this school where inquiry truly has become 'just the way we do things around here' rather than a teaching approach.

This New Zealand Curriculum update supports using the National Standards with the New Zealand Curriculum. There is an introduction by Mary Chamberlain, the revised National Administration Guidelines (NAGs) for easy reference, and a timeline to help guide implementation and use of the National Standards in schools.

National Standards come into effect in English-medium schools with pupils in years 1 to 8 in 2010. The standards set clear expectations for students in reading, writing and mathematics in the first eight years at school. The National Standards are also available online on this website.
