Digital story: Hauraki Plains College
How can we better connect up with our primary schools?
At Hauraki Plains College we did some work around how to better connect up with our primary schools. We started off with a couple of visits per year. However, we discussed how we could get together more and have more conversations around student learning?
For some students the transition from primary to secondary school is almost like emigrating. That's really heartbreaking for primary teachers. We have quite a few primary trained teachers on the staff here at Hauraki Plains College. We want to value the huge amount of work primary teachers put into teaching and assessment. We need to appreciate that we are all about wanting the best for our young people. So doesn't it make sense to work together and have some sort of coherent approach across all the schools?
We have picked up David Hargreave's work on the four deeps and nine gateways and have used this as a strategic framework. We might all be working on different gateways but we are continually sharing information on where we are going. For example some of the schools are looking at student voice, we are looking at assessment for learning. Some of the primary schools have done a lot of work on assessment for learning so we have been able to learn from them. It is a sharing of information and also having a coherent approach to our work for the sake of our young people.
It is lovely for the teachers to have conversations across the sector. It has been a huge step forward. We have put a lot of energy into making sure it is working.
