Northcote Intermediate recently undertook an inquiry topic on financial literacy, which covered a large number of related topics, including:
- saving and spending
- earning interest and paying interest on loans
- credit cards
- mortgages
- entrepreneurs
- philanthropy
- KiwiSaver.
Students’ learning was supported in a variety of ways including interactive websites, games, movie clips, related worksheets, and a visit by an ASB GetWise financial literacy facilitator.
'You have taught us what would happen if we were to borrow so much money from credit cards and what would happen if we kept borrowing and how much you have to pay back'.
Joshua and Nathan, students
ASB GetWise is a free financial literacy programme developed to assist New Zealand schools to deliver financial literacy concepts to their students. The programme is available at three levels for primary and one for year 7-8. The programme also provides a resource pack, which includes activities and lesson plans to support a continuation of the learning after the session ends.
'Your stories were really funny. Before you came in I had a savings account and an Eftpos card. I earn $10 a week but I used to spend it all. After you came to my class now I save $ and I spend some on me. Thank so you much for teaching me to be money wise.'
Catherine, student
Key financial literacy concepts are introduced and explained in the programme, with topics covered in the year 7-8 programme including:
- the difference between casual, part-time, and full-time work
- getting a job - how to get experience and qualifications
- employee rights and responsibilities
- spending money - credit cards, debit cards, and debt
- saving money - how to set realistic savings goals.
'I learned that it’s best to open a bank account to save money because you get interest, and you end up having more money than you put it.'
Nadia and Kawthar, students
More information about the programme can be found on the GetWise website.
