Creating better people

Being a new principal the new curriculum has become a wonderful opportunity to lead school wide change.
We are working with the thought of 'creating better people' using the new curriculum.
To us, better people means all those things the new curriculum looks for - connected, confident, actively involved, life long learners and having the values that we are all agreed are important to us as a Board, teachers and school community. We are approaching this by using Angus Macfarlane's ideas surrounding the key indicators of (Māori) success at school, attendance, engagement and a focus on achievement and by considering closely what exactly it is that our particular children need to become better people and how we can improve our pedagogy in delivering the teaching to achieve this using our local community and environment.
So far we are making good and speedy progress. For some this is a quantum leap from teaching as it has been but for most it is teaching as it should be. I am certain that it will lead to improved teaching, better learning, an improving school and to building better people.
